The Ewell Lab is a research group in the Department of Biology at the University of Mississippi. We conduct discipline-based education research focused on biology education and STEM equity by investigating how classroom practices, social influences, and institutional structures shape student learning and persistence. Our work combines qualitative and quantitative methods to understand student experiences, beliefs, and behaviors in undergraduate biology courses, particularly those related to metacognition, academic help-seeking, and the use of effective study strategies. We are especially interested in how educators can design inclusive courses that minimize barriers to success, promote evidence-based learning practices, and improve outcomes for all students. Our work also draws on insights from cognitive neuroscience to inform interventions that promote learning. Through our research, we aim to inform instructors, departments, and policymakers working to build more equitable and effective STEM learning environments.
